The main characteristics of trade winds are as follows

♦ The trades blow in the tropics between the sub-tropical high pressure belt or (the Horse latitudes) to the equatorial low pressure belt between 30⁰ and 30⁰S

♦ They are deflected to the right of their course in the Northern Hemisphere to become the North-East trades and to the left of their course in the Southern Hemisphere to become the South-East trades.

♦ Trade winds bring rain to the eastern margins of continents.

♦ They are associated with intense depressions and cyclones.

♦ They move north and south with the apparent movement of the Sun giving rise to trade wind desert.

♦ They are constant in strength and direction.

♦ In the Indian Ocean and the South-West Pacific ocean, trade winds are replaced by monsoon winds. Other than this they are permanent and constant winds.
