● Social causes : -
The French Society was divided into three estates and there was inequality in terms of wealth , privileges and payment of taxes -
(1) 1st Estate - This estate included clergy who enjoyed certain privileges by birth. They were exempted from paying taxes.
(2) 2nd Estate - It consists of nobles who enjoyed feudal privileges. 60 % of land was owned by nobles. There were also exempted from paying taxes.
(3) 3rd Estate - It included peasants , workers and middle class. Peasants and workers were render services to the lord in their house and fields. They use to pay taxes.
● Economic causes : -
(1) When Louis XVI ascended throne inherited empty treasury.
(2) Louis XVI had taken loan of 1 billion livre to help USA to gain independence from Britian.
(3) The taxes imposed on third estates created unrest in France.
(4) In order to impose new taxes , Louis XVI called upon the meeting of Estates General on 5th May , 1789 which resulted in the revolution.

(1) The king of France were aristocratic rulers who had faith in devine theory of rights.
(2) There was no uniform system of law and order.
(3) The cost of maintaining army , court was high.
(4) Long years of continuous war had drained the financial resources of France.
● Immediate causes : -
(1) The king of France commanded troops to move into the city.
(2) There was a rumours that the army would open fire upon the citizens.
(3) The people began to search arms in government building.
(4) The peasants were destroyed and it stone fragments were sold in the markets.
