The French king divided the French society into three estates, the First estate( The Clergy), the Second estate(The Nobles) and the Third estate(The Common People). The first estate held one fifth of the total land and they ruled the Church in France. They were exempted from paying any taxes and they supported absolute monarchy. The church collected tithe(one tenth) from the common people for the support of the church. The Second Estate (The Nobles) had about 80,000 families who belonged to the nobility. They enjoyed maximum privileges, did not pay any taxes, held the highest positions of power in French administration and collected income from the peasants. Whereas the third estate (The Common People) were the middle class, the peasants and the workers, they included educated middle class, doctors, lawyers, teachers, industrialists, merchants and others. They were treated unfairly, they were the only class who paid tax. They paid 50% of their income. The peasants and the artisans could hardly survive after paying taxes to the landlords, the church and the state.Apart from paying tithes to the church, the Third estate had to pay other taxes too. The burden of paying taxes alone by the third estate was the main reason for French Revolution
