Literacy and education are vehicles of progress in the modern day world. They help us to understand and successfully operate in the world that we live in. Without education we are left directionless in a dark world. Education liberates us and enhances our skills and innate talents. In the chapter, 'How I Taught My Grandmother to Read' we see that the grandmother wishes to receive an education in her old age.She could not decipher what was written in the weekly magazine Karmaveera, which published her favourite novel 'Kashi Yatre' one chapter at a time. She thought of taking help from the villagers or even going to the next village to her granddaughter but she could not bring herself to any of it.
The grandmother is motivated and eager to learn. In the absence of education, she feels helpless and dependent. Finally when she receives the gift of literacy from her granddaughter by learning the Kannada alphabet, she feels confident and fulfilled.
