The first world war had led to the defeat of the ottoman empire . There was a rumour that a harsh peace treaty would be brought upon the Khalifa ( islamic head). hence the muslims in india decided to force britain to change their policy.
Mahatma gandhi saw this as an oppotunity to join hindus and muslims. they ( gandhi ji and some muslim leaders - shaukat ali and muhammad ali) decided to launch the khilafat- non cooperation movement.
