William Adam (1796 – 1881) toured the ‘pathshalas’ in Bengal, mostly those in the north of Calcutta. Most of them were of the ‘gurukul’ type, with gurus or teachers, who taught the students. These ‘pathshalas’ mainly taught Vedas and languages – Bengali and Sanskrit.


Born in Scotland, William Adam was a missionary, minister and a Harvard Professor. In 1818 he became a missionary and came to Bengal. Initially his aim was to learn Bengali and translate the New Testament into Bengali.
