The East India Company was an English company formed for the exploitation of trade with East and Southeast Asia and India. Incorporated by royal charter on December 31, 1600, it was started as a monopolistic trading body so that England could participate in the East Indian spice trade.

Earlier, India was well known for the fine qualities of cotton and silk produced in India. Spices such as pepper, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom were too in great demand. Such goods attracted the European trading companies (including East India Company) to trade with India.

Their efforts to fortify settlements and carry on profitable trade also led to conflicts with the local rulers.
