The narrator was a worker at the dock and loved to eat fruits. He used to steal the fruits particularly the oranges and bananas to have them as well as for enjoyment. Pongo was the guard at the dock.

One day as the narrator was passing through the gates with stolen oranges, he accidentally got caught, and Pongo tried to give a punishment that others would see and remember the consequences o stealing.
