Kashmir was ruled by the Afghans, who were very cruel to their subjects.

So Pandit Bir Dhar, the Hindu revenue minister of Kashmir fled and took refuge in the kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

He supplied valuable information about Kashmir to the Maharaja and encouraged him to conquer that territory.

On May 1819, huge Sikh forces attacked Kashmir and after a brief battle at Shopian, they defeated Afghans and conquered Srinagar and entire Kashmir valley.
