Construction: It consists of a cylindrical bulb B which is filled with mercury. A capillary tube T of uniform and fine bore is attached to the bulb. Just above the bulb at point C the tube is made narrow and bent.

A clinical thermometer consists of a long ,narrow , uniform glass tube . It has a blub at one end. The bulb contains mercury . Outside the blub , a small shining thread of mercury can be seen. The scale we use is the celsius scale , indicated by °C.

How to use a clinical thermometer ?
Wash the thermometer , preferably with an antiseptic solution. Hold it firmly and give it a few jerķs . The jerķs will bring the level of mercury down. Ensure that it falls below 35°C. Now place the blub of the thermometer under your tongue . After a minute , take the thermometer out and note the reading . This is your body temperature .
Note : The temperature should always stated with its unit , °C.
The normal temperature of human body is 37°C.
