the society was divided into 3 estates and thus was known as the society of estates in which the 1st estate was clergy 2nd was nobility and 3rd were the common people the first and the second estate enjoyed privileges and were exempted from paying taxes but the 3rd estate had to pay direct taxes such as taille to the govt and tithe to the church the enjoyed no privileges
