Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.

Nelson Mandela’s contribution in the struggle for independence of the black in South Africa was exemplary. He had to fight for their freedom for many years; he also remained in prison for many years.  

After a long struggle, the light of freedom dawned in 1994. His party African National Congress (ANC) party won 252 of the 400 seats in the first democratic elections of South Africa’s history.

He was sworn in as the country’s first black President. Mandela is remembered for the great work he did for the emancipation of the colored people in South Africa. He can be termed as the Gandhi of South Africa.
