As Sinhala speakers were in majority ,they tried to establish supremecy in Sri Lanka.. They made sinhala language as their official language disregaring the tamil language

The sri lankan tamils wanted tamil language to be regarded as thir ifficial language, regional autonomy and also equal opprtunities for jobs and education

They made a huge struggle for their demans .They lanched many struggles and in 1980s several parties were formed demanding an independent Tamil Elam (state ) in north and eastern parts of sri lanka.
