The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by Viceroy and Governor-General of India Lord Irwin. Answer:
In 1911, the colonial government officially announced to shift its capital from Calcutta to Delhi. For the construction of Delhi as a capital city, the British government called two architects, Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker, Calcutta to Delhi, to design Delhi. Delhi (as a capital) took 20years to build. It was designed completely different to the other crowded cities. Streets were constructed straightly with sprawling houses set in the centre of large compounds. To serve the purpose of clean and healthy space, the city was supplied with better water, sewage disposal and proper drainage facilities.
