Novels appeared in South India during the colonial rule.
The initial translations were mere translations from the English novels.
But the people of Kerala were not familiar with the way the English people lived which was portrayed in the novels.
Therefore, the idea of translation was given up and novels were written in Malayam style.
The first novel in Malayam style was Indulekha published in 1889.
The case was very similar in Andhra Pradesh.
