Lithium and magnesium show diagonal relationship as they have same polarizing power so elements of second period shows similarities with elements of third period of next group.

Properties which show similarities in lithium and magnesium are:---

1)Both compounds lithium and magnesium form oxides LiOH and Mg(OH)2 both are weak base while hydroxides of other members of their group form strong bases.

2)The carbonates and hydroxides and also nitrates of both lithium and magnesium decompose on heating.

3)Due to small size of li and Mg their hallides are soluble in organic solvents.

4)They form hydrates like LiCl.H2O and MgCl2.2H2O.
