In many places in India, especially in the rural areas and among the poorer sections, girls in the family are either not sent to school or withdrawn from school mid-way through their school education. This happens less frequently in the case of boys. The logic used to explain this is the basic ingrained idea of girls being born in families only to do household work and being married off early in their teens.
In view of the above, the Government has introduced the midday meal scheme to lure the poorer families to enrol their children, both boys and girls, in school and ensure continuity of their education.

Studies from 2014, reveal that, the enrolment percentage of girls has improved over two fold to that of boys during the decade, from 18.17% among boys and 40.52 % among the girls. This growth reflects a change in the mindset of people towards the girl child in a male dominated Indian setup. The average annual dropout percentage of girls also remained better to that of boys.
However, it
is found that there is still a large difference in literacy rates, especially among women in the different states of India.
