The games which are popular during ‘Magh Bihu’ celebrations are pot breaking contests – known as ‘Tekeli Bhonga’, friendly wrestling and fights between people, rooster fights and buffalo fights.
People practise and train themselves for these games and competitions. Roosters and buffaloes are also trained to fight and some people place bets on them.
‘Magh Bihu’ celebrates the end of harvest season. It is celebrated in Assam and North-Eastern States during January – February.
Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is a cultural festival of Assam, which is celebrated at the same time as Makar Sankranti in winter.
It is a weeklong festival, where the young people create temporary huts called Bhelaghar, with bamboo, thatch and leaves.
They enjoy having feasts here and later put these huts on fire, as a part of worshipping Agnidev or Fire God.
Bonfires are also lighted on the night before the Magh Bihu, where everyone sing and dance merrily. Tekeli Bhonga is an enjoyable pot-breaking game, which is played alongside friendly bull fights between groups of youngsters.
