The two years in New York were happy ones for Helen and cause for genuine pleasure when she reflected upon them. She remembered the walks they all took together every day in Central Park, the only part of the city that was congenial to her. She never lost even a little jot of delight in this great park. Helen loved to have it described every time she entered because it was beautiful in all its aspects. The aspects of the park were so many that it seemed to be beautiful in a different way each day of the nine months she spent in New York. In the spring, they made excursions to various places of interest. Sailing on the Hudson River and wandering about on its green banks of which Bryant loved to sing. She liked the simple, wild grandeur of the palisades. Among the places she visited was West Point, Tarrytown, the home of Washington Irving where she walked through 'Sleepy Hollow'. These trips were planned to give the pupils every advantage that those who hear could enjoy and release them from the cramping circumstances in which their lives were set.
