Meristematic Tissue

Group of living cells which are present at specific locations and keep on dividing to add new cells in the body. These group of cells remain in a continuous state of division and help to increase the length and girth of plant.

Characteristics of Meristematic Tissue

These cells can be oval, rectangular or round in shape.

These cells are similar in structure and are made up of cellulose cell wall that is thin and elastic.

These cells do not have intercellular spaces between them.

Each cell has dense cytoplasm and a large nucleus. The dense protoplasmic of the cell has small vacuoles or no vacuoles.

Occurrence / Types

These cells are present only in specific locations which keep on dividing to add new cells.

On the basis of occurrence they are divided further as :

Apical Meristem
It is present at the growing tips stems and roots and increase the length of stems and roots.

2. Lateral Meristem

The girth of the stem and roots increases due to lateral meristem. It is present on both sides of stem and roots.

3. Intercalary

It is present in some plants and located near the nodes. It helps in the growth of leaves and inter nodes.

⭕✔️Meristematic tissue ➡️

Tissue that bring about overall growth and repair are called meristamatic tissue.

➡️➡️Divided into three parts✔️

Apical meristamatic

lateral meristamatic

intercalary meristamatic

➿Apical meristamatic〽️

it helps to grow a plant vertically

➿Lateral meristamatic〽️

it helps in gridth

➿Intercalary meristamatic〽️

it helps to grow flowers , branches , leaves etc.
