Directory rules FranceFrench Directory. The Directorywas a five-member committee which governedFrance from 1795, when it replaced the Committee of Public Safety, until it was overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte in the Coup of 18 Brumaire (8–9 November 1799) and replaced by the FrenchConsulate.

a. After the fall of the Robespierre'​s government the wealthier middle class took over power and made changes in the constitution.
b. As per the new constitution non propertied were denied political rights like right to vote. 
c. A new Directory was appointed, whose main aim was to prevent the concentration of power by the executive..
d. Its aim was to  provide for the separation of power between the legislature and the Executive so as to prevent governemnt becoming tyranical.
e. This however was followed by frequent clashes between the two. 
​f.The Directors lacked popular support , and were dependent on the army.
g. This led to political instability in the government and made conditions favourable for Napoleon , a dictator to take over powers and establish control.
