Calcutta was developed amazingly well by the british and the city was first made the capital of British India by the general of the British raj named Warren Hastings.

This is the city with a port and an amazing business and commercial and trade hub within all of India at least at the time that it was the capital.

This may have been the reason that the British went to Delhi since it became too commercial in the city of calcutta.
