calcutta had many distinct features since it was at a sea port but later the british realised that the northern parts had fertile land and due to this many invaders started entering india from the northern himalayas unidentified or captured by the british. so they shifted their capital to new delhi which is located at the centre of indi which helped them take care of each part of india.

hope this helps

The British had shifted their headquarters and capital to Calcutta after 1772 and shifted it from Murshidabad.

In the leadership of Warren Hastings Calcutta became the city of palaces and also the coexisting whites and natives in different portions.

For geographical reasons, British decided to shift the capital to Delhi which is located in the central area.
