Distribution of coal in India
In India, coal exists in two major geological age’s rock sequence, namely Gondwana, a little over 200 million years of era and in tertiary deposits that are only 55 million years of age.
- Gondwana's significant metallurgical coal resource is situated in the Damoder Valley. Significant coal areas are Jhira, Raniganj, Bokaro.
- There are also coal deposits in the ‘Godavari’, ‘Mahanadi’, ‘Son’ and ‘Wardha valleys’.
- Tertiary coals exists in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, and Nagaland in the ‘north eastern states’.
