Coalfields in India are distributed into two categories -
1. Gondwana coalfields -
98% of coal in india is of this type. These are good quality (bituminous coal).
Important coalfields - Ranigunj (West Bengal) and Jharia (Jharkhand)
2. Tertiary coalfields -
newer and younger coal. These are of poor quality (lignite and peat).
Important coalfields - Riasi (Kashmir) and Neyveli (Tamil Nadu).
