Hi.
The fall of Convention government allowed the wealthier middle classes to seize the power.
A new constitution was introduced which denied the voting right of non-propertied people.
It provided with 2 legislative councils and a Directory, and executive made up of 5 members.
The directory often clashed with the legislative councils and was dismissed.
The political instability in the Directory paved the way for the rise of a military dictator, Napoleon Bonaparte.
He viewed himself as a moderniser of Europe and was rightly seen as a liberator .However, his quest for power led to his ultimate downfall with his defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
