The beginning of Helen's life was quite simple and akin to the life of any other child. She was the darling of her family, named after her grandmother. She began to show many signs of an eager, self-asserting disposition quite early on in life and everything she saw other people doing, she would insist upon imitating. At six months she could formulate words and attract everyone's attention. 'Water' was one of the first words she learned and she remembered it even after her illness when all speech was lost to her. She began walking when she was a year old, her mother had just taken her out of the bath and attracted by flickering shadows of leaves that danced in the sunlight on the floor, she slipped out from her mother's lap running towards them. She calls them her happy days, full of summer, songs, birds, flowers and the happiness of partaking in the joys of childhood with nature as her guiding spirit
