Gandhi insisted that he would not treceive any remuneration for his public services if he had to prolong his stay in South Africa and since he still thought it important to live as a barrister he required about £ 300 to cover his expenses. So he enrolled as Natal's Supreme Court advocate. An Indian meeting with Sheth Haji Muhammad, Natal's leading Indian leader in the chair, was held at Sheth Abdulla's residence on June 25, 1894, and it was resolved to give opposition to the Franchise Bill. He was instrumental in forming the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) on August 22, 1894, marking the birth of the first permanent political organization in South Africa to strive to uphold and protect Indian rights. Gandhi had established himself in South Africa as a political leader by 1896.
