It is generally believed that economy of the Harappan people was mainly based on external trade. It is true to the extent that the Harappan urban centres were supported by the external trade but actually agriculture was the backbone of the civilization. Agriculture was supported and supplanted by the animal husbandry.

- The economy , society and religion of Harappan civilization have been discussed as follows:
1. Economy- Agriculture formed the main backbone of the Harappan civilization along with animal husbandry. On the other hand, it was also largely supported by external trade. They traded with many other countries such as China, Persia and Mesopotamia involving silver, gold, beads, etc.
2. Society- the society was mainly divided based on the occupation of the people. It was known to be an agrarian society. There was an upper class( powerful ruling class) that dominated others. Strong family organizations formed the base of the society.
3. Religion- no temples existed. However, they seemed to be following religions such as Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Worshipping of Mother Goddess( Shakti) was prevalent. Some figures also suggest the worship of Shiva. They also worshipped other objects such as tree, fire, sun and even animals.
