describe the effect of colonial rule on the lives of the people of bastar
Answers
During the British colonial rule, the tribes of Bastar faced discriminations and were subject to several new rules and laws, imposed by the British.
Mainly, the powers of tribal chieftains were taken away from them and they were made to follows rules as laid down by the British. Heavy taxation on the poor people caused severe hardships and money-lenders made use of this opportunity to harass them and extort money. The Bastar tribes considered the forests, a gift from their Gods. When the British imposed the Forest Tax, for access and use of forest products, the tribes rose up in revolt, in 1910.
The Bastar rebellion was a result of the oppression and torture the villagers were facing from the British Raj.
The villagers were deprived of their rights and were forced to stay at one corner of the forest, whereas the whole forest belonged to them.
They were scared that they will be forced to relocate without any prior notice or compensation.
The British Raj also banned shifting cultivation.
