Describe the episode of Mexico Olympics which took place in 1968. Do you think that Athletes were justified in raising the issue ?
Answers
I think that the athletes were not justified in raising the issue because that was not the right place to raise the issue. It was delibrate and violent breach of the fundamental principles of the olympic spirit. Athletes' salute was not acceptable.
The event that took place in Mexico Olympics (1968) was the salute to the Black Power.
The black power salute was a federal protest which was accompanied by African-American players Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their reward receiving function at the 1968 summertime olympic gymnasium in Mexico City. As they took a turn to submit their flags and listen to the American national song, they each lifted a black-gloved fist and retained them lifted until the anthem had ended.
The two U.S. athletes accepted their commemorations without the shoes but donning black socks to symbolize black scarcity. Smith wrapped a black scarf around his nape to signify black self-esteem. The event is regarded as one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic games.
According to me, athletes were not supported in elevating the concern because that was not the correct platform. It was a conscious and severe violation of the key policies of the Olympic spirit. Athletes' salute was not admissible.
