The ethnic composition of Belgium is very complicated, despite being a small country.

  • 59% of the total population of Belgium lives in the Flemish region and are Dutch-speaking.

  • 40% of the Belgian population lives in the Wallonia region and are French-speaking.

  • The remaining 1% of Belgians speak German.

  • But in the capital city of Brussels, 80% of the Belgians are French-speaking, whereas the remaining 20% of the Belgians are Dutch-speaking.

Note: Even though the Dutch-speaking language community form a majority in Belgium, they are a minority in the capital state of Brussels.
