In mid-nineteenth century Italy was divided into seven states. Only Piedmont - Sardinia was under the rule of an Italian prince. The events that led to the proclamation of Victor Emmanuel II, the ruler of Piedmont - Sardinia as the King of united Italy -

1. Count Cavour, the Prime Minister of Piedmont - Sardinia started a movement to unify Italy.

2. Guiseppe Mazzini started a society called Young Italy in 1830s. It spread the message of nationalism all over Italy.  

3. Guiseppe Garibaldi led the military struggle for the unification of Italy. A large number of volunteers participated in it.

4. Piedmont - Sardinia defeated all the other states of Italy by 1861. In this way Italy was unified and Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the King of Italy.
