Answer:

The European Union is a powerful organisation that has played a major role in forging strong economic, political and social ties between the nations of Europe. It has evolved to be a strong organisation which commands enormous economic and military power, but also as a staunch advocate of global peace and democracy.

Membership of countries of the former USSR into the EU made sure that their fragile democracies survived in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, and through the Euro and Schengen Zone has forged strong economic ties and interdependence among Europe.

Although a largely successful body, it is currently not at a stage to emerge as an alternative centre of power due to the rising republicanism in European nations such as France and Germany, and the exit of the United Kingdom itself is a prime example of the flaws that plague the EU. Hence, unless drastic changes occur, it is not viably possible in the near or distant future that the EU may emerge as a centre of power.
