Answer:

The Indian tenants worked on the land. The chief commercial crop was indigo. The English planters compelled all sharecroppers to plant 15% of their holdings with indigo. They had to surrender the entire indigo harvest as rent to the landlords.

British landlords exploited Indian sharecroppers. They had bound them in a contract system. According to the contract these sharecroppers had to grow indigo crop on 15% of the land holdings and submit it as rent/tax to the landlords. The sharecroppers were distressed and burdened with this system.

Gandhi helped them by remaining with them for seven months. He made a plan to free the sharecroppers of this injustice and successfully implemented it. He took the following steps to solve the problem:

1. He studied the entire situation thoroughly.

2. He collected enough evidence against the British landlords.

3. He rallied the people together.

4. He made a thorough plan to execute it.

5. He presented the proofs against the landlords in the court.

6. He even informed the higher British authorities.

7. He proved to the British authorities and landlords that the latter were wrong.

8. Finally he won and the British landlords had to pay the compensation to the sharecroppers.

This was the first defeat of the British that led to India’s Freedom.
