The peasants of Champaran were forced to plan 15% of the Holdings with Indigo and surrender the entire Indigo harvest as rent to the British .Presently Germany had now developed synthetic Indigo as a result Indigo plantation was no more profitable. So the British landlords wanted compensation for being released from the natural agreement .The prices of natural Indigo would go down due to the the synthetic indigo.

Gandhiji asked only 50% of the planters money as refund .On this the planters offered to refund 25% of the money .To everyone's surprise Gandhiji agreed to this thus beaking the deadlock .For Gandhi the amount of refund was less important than the fact that the landlords had been forced to return part of the money and with it a part of their prestige .
