Answer:

Aluminium ore is called bauxite . The bauxite is purified to produce aluminium oxide, a white powder from which aluminium can be extracted. The extraction is done by electrolysis. ... positively charged aluminium ions gain electrons from the cathode, and form molten aluminium

Answer:

Using Bayers method, to extract 99% pure aluminum from bauxite ore containing SiO_2 and Fe_2O_3

Explanation:

Two steps must be taken to separate this element from the bauxite ore. The first of these is the Bayer method, which can be used to extract aluminum oxide from minerals. The compound then undergoes electrolysis to produce high-purity aluminum.

Step 1:

Bauxite Purification:

(Fe_2O_3) Iron oxides  (SiO_2) are present in Bauxite as chief impurities.

to make the liable to corrosion and aluminum brittle, these impurities should be removed from Bauxite. Here we use the Bayer method and then the compound then undergoes electrolysis to produce high-purity aluminum

Step: 2

In the case of Bauxite which contains excess  Fe_2O_3 impurity, we use this method for purification, Here, finely divided bauxite is treated with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution to form soluble sodium aluminate, and the solution is filtered to remove impurities.

Al_2O_3.nH_2O + NaOH2NaAlO_2 + 2(n)H_2O

Soluble sodium aluminate is treated with excess water to form a precipitate of aluminum hydroxide.

2NaAlO_2 + 4H_2O2Al(OH)_3 + 2NaOH

The Al(OH)_3 precipitate is separated, washed to remove NaOH, dried and calcined at about 1500° C. to obtain pure bauxite (alumina).

Step: 3

Pure Bauxite (Alumina ) Electrolysis :

Electrolysis of pure bauxite is carried out in carbon (graphite) connected steel tanks. A carbon lining serves as the cathode and the anode consists of carbon rods suspended in the melt.

In molten satay, pure alumina is a poor conductor of electricity and its melting point is around 2025 °C, so flour spurs and cryolite are added to alumina to increase the melting point fluidity.

When an electric current is passed through this mixture, the aluminum is maintained in a liquid state at the  cathode and sinks to the bottom, from where it is periodically drawn out through the tapped hole.

Hence, we extract the 99% of pure aluminum from bauxite ore containing SiO_2 and Fe_2O_3
