Late start of modernisation in India

Ancient India was ruled by several Hindu and Muslim rulers. The last of these were the Mughals after which the British East India Company under the British Crown gradually took over most parts of India.

Most of the Mughal kings, who were descendants of the Afghan king Babar, plundered and looted India. They were mostly intolerant and focussed solely on their gains.

Later when the British East India Company took over, they too worked towards moving the wealth of India to Great Britain. They achieved this by unfair trade practices and government laws.

India gained independence from the British in 1947 and since then it has been a lengthy and painstaking journey to shake away the legacy of earlier rulers, set aside internal politics, and put in place robust laws and policies in place of archaic ones.

Factors that responsible for late start of modern period in India are:

➸ The main factor is British rules of their government and Civil war. Due to which India got independent very late.

➸ During the colonialism period of about 2 years, British established themselves and they were dominating the India. They exploited commercially of the natural resources of India.

➸ Past of British rule, there were other ruler named Mughal Kings, most of them were greedy, they focused on to exploit the resources of India and use them for themselves.

➸ After independence, India is a democratic country and hence leaders keep on changing their rules without knowing the needs and interests of citizens.

  • So, India is still developing country, since other countries are already developed finely.

And hence, the early modern period began in the 16th century.
