The factors are:
1)How people perceive their identity.
For ex as long as people saw themselves as Catholics or Protestents in Northern Ireland, social division persisted.
2)How the leaders of various groups raise their demands.
If the demands are within the constitutional framework and not at the cost of others then there is no fear of division.
3)How govt reacts to these demands.
If it tries to supress the demand of monorities then there would be conflicts.
For ex this was the problem in Srilanka where Tamils were in minority.
