The storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, was important for two reasons: its symbolic meaning and the spark of the French Revolution. First, the Bastille was in use by the French monarchy as a state prison (dating back to the 17th century). The monarchy put its political prisoners in the Bastille. The French people saw the Bastille as a symbol of a tyrannical government, and with its fall, it was the beginning of the end for the French monarchy. Secondly, the attack and the fall of the Bastille was the spark the French peasantry needed to start their revolution. King Louis XVI, finally, stepped down (forcibly) in 1792, and the French Republic experienced its birth.
