Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882, she was stricken by an illness that left her blind and deaf. Beginning in 1887, Keller's teacher, Anne Sullivan, helped her make tremendous progress with her ability to communicate, and Keller went on to college, graduating in 1904. In 1920, Keller helped found the ACLU. During her lifetime, she received many honors in recognition of her accomplishments.
Helen Keller was the first of two daughters born to Arthur H. Keller and Katherine Adams Keller. She also had two older stepbrothers. Keller's father had proudly served as an officer in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The family was not particularly wealthy and earned income from their cotton plantation. Later, Arthur became the editor of a weekly local newspaper, the North Alabamian.

heya , here's ur answer ,
The family on Helen's father's side descended from Caspar Keller, a native of Switzerland who had settled in Maryland. One of her Swiss ancestors was the first teacher of the deaf in Zurich and had written on a book on the subject of their education. It was a strange occurrence considering the fact that Helen was to become deaf and blind. Her grandfather, Caspar Keller's son had grabbed large tracts of land in Alabama and settled there. Helen was told that once a year he went from Tuscumbia to Philadelphia on horseback to purchase supplies for the plantation. Her aunt had in her possession many letters of his to his family which gave charming and detailed accounts of these trips. Her grandmother Keller was a daughter of one of Lafayette's aides, Alexander Spotswood, an early Colonial Governor of Virginia. She was also second cousin to Robert E.Lee. Her father Arthur H Keller was a captain in the confederate army and her mother Kate Adams was his second wife, many years younger than him. Her grandfather Benjamin Adams had married Susanna E. Goodhue, and lived in Newbury, Massachusetts, for many years. Their son, Charles Adams, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and moved to Helena, Arkansas. When the Civil War broke out, he fought on the side of the South and became a brigadier-general. He and Lucy Helen Everett, who belonged to the same family of Everetts as Edward Everett and Dr Edward Everett Hale were married. Once the war was over, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee...
