EXPLANATION:
The short story ‘The Journey’ is an autobiographical account of the famous North Eastern writer Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi. In this story the author describes his return journey from home.
The author, who was a Government Officer, had come to his village on a six-month leave to get married. After his holidays were over he had to return to work. Since it was a long hilly journey to the bus stand and there was no porter available, his aged father carried his heavy trunk.
When they reached the bus-stand his father asked for a pair of old shoes. It was then that the author realised that his poor old father was bare feet. His parents had laboured hard to get him educated. They had lived in penury for his education. But he had been so selfish that he took no heed of their poverty. So seeing his father’s bare feet he was filled with sorrow and remorse.
