The narrator first met Nicola and Jacopo on the outskirts of Verona. The narrator saw that they were selling wild stawberries .despite of the disapproval of the driver the narrator stoppedand buyed fruits from them and even befriended them

In the short story 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' by A.J. Cronin, the narrator first got to know Nicola and Jacopo as they had stopped his car for selling wild strawberries to him on the outskirts of Verona. Luigi, the driver, shrugged his shoulders to show his disapproval as both Nicola and Jacopo had a shabby and unhygienic appearance. They were wearing worn out clothes and their hair was tangled. Luigi tried to stop the narrator from buying wild strawberries from them by saying that he would get much better fruit in Verona. However, the narrator was taken by their innocence and bought their biggest basket of strawberries.
