I met my best friend when I was in 4th grade.

I was just beginning to become comfortable in my school in California, when all of a sudden, I was struck by a feeling that I needed a friend and not just a “shared” friend.

It was during recess that we met. I was in a group of shared friends and wanted to play “four corners” with them. Unfortunately, they had already started and I had to wait in order to get in. So I waited for quite some time, until I got bored of waiting around. I waved goodbye to them and left, wondering aimlessly around the campus. I looked around, stared that two girls playing tether ball, observed two boys playing in the sandbox, etc. Then, a sudden eureka moment struck me. I needed an actual friend.

Afterwards, I walked towards the benches with shade and looked around for someone who was not occupied with talking. My gaze wandered around for a while until I saw a girl around my age sitting by herself in silence. I awkwardly walked over to her bench and sat next to her with some distance between us. For a while, I didn’t know what to say. My mind was generating with questions that would be appropriate to ask her about. I didn’t want to make things awkward, so I turned to her and asked her,

“Do you like Pokemon?”

She turned to me and said, “yes.”

After a hesitant pause, I asked her another question similar to this, “Do you play the Pokemon games?”

Surprisingly, she also said yes.

Afterwards, our conversations become more comforting as we talked about which character we liked the most, etc. When the bell rang for the end of recess, I asked her for her name. In return I told her mine.
