After ten days Gulliver returned home from Brobdingnag, he was invited by a ship captain to join him on a voyage. He sees this as a great opportunity and he accepted to go with the Captain.

Three days in the journey due to a storm they were forced to drive the ship north-northeast where they were attacked by pirates. Gulliver found himself sent off with four days provisions and on the fifth day he got to a small island where he fell asleep. When he woke up he realized that what he thought to be a cloud floating above the island was not a cloud but a floating island; Laputa. He called out to the people he saw above him and he was pulled up
through pulleys.

Laputa is a floating island that contains 10,000 acres and is perfectly circular. It is able to move about the surface of Balnibarbi. As punishment, the island would lower itself on people below the island who refused to pay tribute to Laputa by blocking sun and rain until they make payment. The island is controlled by a central magnet.

The people of Laputa are fixated on mathematics and music. They cannot dress well or erect buildings properly because they always input mathematical equations in their dealings. Their heads are always leaning to the left or right and because they are always distracted they have the flappers who with the aid of a rattle-like object touch the part of their body that needs to make an action.
