The energy in coal comes from energy that was stored in giant plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in swamp forests, even before the dinosaurs! When these giant plants and ferns died, theyformed layers at the bottom of the swamps. Water and dirt began to pile up on top of the dead plant remains.

Answer:

Formation of coal

It is estimated that the present deposit of coal took place about 300 million years ago. At that time our planet was covered with dense forests. Due to natural calamity like flood, earthquake etc. these forests got buried under the soil. As time passed, more and more layers of soil deposited over them. There they were compressed. As they buried deeper and deeper, temperature also rose. Under high pressure and high temperature, dead plants slowly converted to lignite coal. When the lignite got buried deeper for a significantly long period of time, the increased pressure and temperature converted it into a harder and more superior quality of coal i.e. anthracite coal.
