Describe the formation of lakes.

A lake is a body of water, that is surrounded by land. It is formed in the hollow part of the land. The lakes are formed in different ways-natural or man-made.

Natural lakes are formed due to the following reasons -

(a) Glacial activity i.e. the glaciers dig out a basin, which is later filled with water.

(b) The Wular lake is formed to tectonic activity. it is in Jammu and Kashmir. lt is the largest fresh water lake. ' ‘

(c) Some lakes are formed due to the action of wind and rivers. The meandering rivers across flood plains form ox bow lakes.

(d) In the coastal areas, spits and bars form lagoons e. g. Chilika lake, Pulicat lake.

(e) Water also collects In the crater of volcanoes

(f) Lakes are also formed due to inland drainage eg Sambhar Lake In Rajasthan.

Man made lakes . The lakes are also formed when rivers are dammed for generation of / electricity eg Gobind Sagar lake
