FRENCH SOCIETY BEFORE THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

Before the french revolution, The french society was divided into three estates namely The clergy, the nobility, and the third estate (peasants).

  • The people who belong to the first two estates i.e., the clergy and the nobility, were given special rights, for example, They didn't need to pay taxes, and were among the majority of landowners in France.
  • While, The peasants were among the majority of population but lacked economic and political power.

  • French society was also centred on the political structure of absolute monarchy. Also,the monarch had all the power in every aspect.

Louis XVI was the absolute monarch of France before the french revolution. This period is also known as Ancien Regime.

The idea of a equality, liberty and a seprate nation worked as a catalyst in the process of the French revolution. After the french revolution:

  • Led to the formation of French National republic.
  • Abolition of feudal system and Monarchy.
  • Gave Napoleon Bonaparte a chance to invade and rule France.
