The three friends hired up an up-river boat.
The boat was called The Pride of Thames. It was an old fashioned chunk of wood, which looked as if it was recklessly dug out from somewhere and was damaged in the process. The narrator at first sight thought that it was some kind of Roman relic possibly a coffin. His friend remarked it was some kind of fossil of a whale and started to point out all the possible evidences.
When they asked the boy who gave that boat, he replied it was "Pride of Thames".
The narrator and his friend thought the boy was joking but the captain came up and said it was indeed a boat popularly called Pride of Thames. The narrator mocked the boat and called it a wreck.
The captain felt offended due to their comments and said it was the best boat from all the stock he had.The Pride of Thames had been in use for the past forty years and added no one complained against the thing.
The narrator and his friend didn't argue any more
