a transformer is a device by which the magnitude if the alternating e.m.f can be increased or decreased...

a transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction..

there are 2 transformers:

1. step up transformer in which a low alternating e.m.f is changed to high alternating e.m.f with same frequency.

2. step down transformer in which high alternating e.m.f is changed to low with same frequency....

why do we use transformers?

transformers are uses in household circuits because different electrical appliances will work with different e.m.f's. It would be difficult to send different e.m.f for different applications therfore transformers are used .
